Here's a small project I made in Febuary.
The goal was to make a simple incremental game and practice making pixel art.
The first prototype was made at blinding speed. In only two days I had the resource exchange mechanics working as well as the saving and loading! None of the things displayed are hard-coded, it's all generated from a scenario in Json format. I reworked some parts over the month but the core is still standing.
I ended up spending more time playtesting and reworking small things than making pixel art. I wanted to make quick pictures for all characters, but I got stuck on the Village. How do you make the same kind of characters as the rest but tiny? I wanted to slowly change the appearance of each actor as you grew in power, but only the Lumberjack is truely updating like I wanted.
Another thing I neglected is how approachable the game is. I added Goals to help tutorialize the mechanics, but I played so much and internalized the mechanics so much that I'm not sure what a new player sees when the game starts.
I'm not sure if I'll continue working on this project. I might reuse the engine for another scenario or start from scratch again.
